Elizabeth Hale Davis Usher

Elizabeth Hale Davis Usher
Elizabeth Hale Davis Usher died on Tuesday August 16 in New Bern, North Carolina, after a recent illness and hospitalization. She was born in Durham, North Carolina on June 14, 1934, the daughter of Helen Peabody Davis and Gifford Davis. She grew up in Durham and attended Duke University earning an AB Degree in History in 1956. While in college, she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She was an active supporter of Duke University, serving as the Alumni Admissions Interviewing Committee Chair from 1981-1983.

Elizabeth married Dr. Charles Usher, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia and moved to Savannah after the birth of their first son, Charles, in 1958. She reared 5 children at White Bluff, teaching them to love the salt marshes and tidal creeks. Elizabeth opened her arms wide to embrace her children's friends as well. There were many a Saturday morning you would find Elizabeth sitting on the porch having coffee with one of those friends, visiting or helping them to solve their life's problems. To know Elizabeth Usher was to be her friend. She always greeted you with her big smile, sparkling eyes and giving heart. She enjoyed gardening, boating, reading or playing bridge with her long-time bridge club friends. In the latter years her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grand children.

Elizabeth was an active member of the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. She attended the Seekers Sunday School class. During her early years in Savannah, she was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Georgia Medical Society, a founding member of the "Pink Ladies" at Memorial Hospital, and involved with the Junior League of Savannah. More recently, she became involved with the Savannah Area Republican Women and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House.

Survivors include: her sister Anne Davis, her children and their spouses; Charles and Pam Usher, Helen Usher, Gifford and Jeannine Usher, Lisa and Chan Garrison, David and Denise Usher, her grand children; Gifford Scott, Caroline Usher, Sue Scott, Robert Vickery, Gifford D. Usher, Rachel Usher, Will Garrison, Jacob Usher and Benjamin Usher.

Visitation: 5:00 – 7:00, Friday, August, 19, at Fox and Weeks, Island Chapel, Whitemarsh, Savannah, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, 11am, at the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church in Savannah Georgia.

Charles, Helen, Gifford, Lisa and David, I was so saddened to hear about your mom, Elizabeth. When I lived in Savannah she truly was my second mom. I have such fond memories of spending the night over with Lisa and our cheerleader days at Windsor Forest. I remember all the fun crab boils, sailing and just sitting down having a chat with your mom. I know she will be dearly missed. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Dottie Crow Biehl
